Chocolate Rice Krispie cakes

In November 2016, Aunty Katie and Nana Sue popped round for lunch, with the latter showing Daisy how to cook chocolate Rice Krispie cakes.  The first step is to cut up and weigh the Mars Bars.  They had an efficient system: Nana Sue would cut and Daisy would weigh.

Following this, Daisy rather precariously stirred melted the Mars Bars on the hob.  Unfortunately, she did briefly experience the warmth of the pan and so we probably won't let her do this again any time soon.  But she didn't cause herself any major damage.

Nana Sue decided to oversee proceedings as the mixture really started to come together.

Daisy appears to be keeping her distance here as she stirs in the Rice Krispies.

Time for more Rice Krispies, says Nana Sue, and who are we to argue?

This is where years of experience kicks in, as the mixture is poured into, and spread across, the tray.

Here is what it looks like close up.

The next step is to melt some chocolate over warm water.

This really is step by step, isn't it.  But here is the melted chocolate patiently waiting to be spread over the Rice Krispie base.

Daisy is distracted by Lynne so Nana Sue takes on chocolate spreading duties.

However, when there are sprinkles to be added, she is only too happy to get completely and utterly involved.

Here they are, very happy with the finished product (after some chilling in the fridge, no doubt).

Jam tarts

In January 2017, I decide to make jam tarts with the two children.  All the ingredients are out and they are ready with their bowls for action.

This is a fun recipe as it enables them to get their hands right into the action to make the pastry, first into a breadcrumb texture...

...and then into a ball of pastry mixture.

Next comes the rolling out, of course...

...followed by using cups to cut out some circular shapes to go into the baking trays.

Then the kids get to fill the tart cases with sticky strawberry jam.

We have some leftover pastry and so they improvise with the addition of lids for some.

This is what they look like before being put into the oven...

...and this is what they looked like coming out of the oven.

Mmmm, jammy.

Fairy cakes

In February 2017, we assemble round the table for more baking action, this time deciding to do the old classic: fairy cakes.  Gregory appears to be getting a little agitated with his wooden spoon.

Daisy is pretty chuffed with her pink icing concoction, will inevitably make its way on to the top of the fairy cakes...

...which are here, baked and ready.

Time to top those spongy squares...

...and, after the icing, the garishly-coloured sprinkles.

A wonderful array of beautifully decorated fairy cakes, I think you'll agree.

Just so you can see Daisy's a little closer.

Pizza

Later in February 2017, it's time for some pizza action.  I made the dough myself, putting it in a bowl to prove...

...where, naturally, it increased in size.

Aunty Katie came round to help with the pizza production line.  I had made some tomato sauce and prepped all the toppings.  Now it was time for them to roll out the dough.

Daisy now turned to spreading on the tomato mixture whilst Aunty Katie helped Gregory out with rolling out the dough.

Next it was time for topping the pizzas.

These were the results of Daisy's and Gregory's pizza construction, both uncooked..

...and cooked (although these pizzas are in a different order).

They were happy to tuck into it having made it.

Finally, Daisy constructed her own ice-cream sundae.
