You can use the internet for loads of stuff these days - buying stuff, looking up all sorts of useful and useless information, general time-wasting, etc, etc. But, as the technology has improved, games are what hold the attention, and they are becoming more and more prevalent and, more importantly, much more playable.
As with most things, interest ebbs and flows in periodic crazes. Each game gets an undue amount of attention while high scores are contested, either via online leaderboards or amongst friends, and then brutally discarded when the idea becomes stale and the enthusiasm wanes. No matter: it's fun while it lasts.
